Tools Required

    • J 28467-360 Engine Support Fixture
    • J 36660-A Torque Angle Meter.

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  2. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief in Engine Controls - 2.2L.
  3. Drain cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  4. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  5. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct and resonator assembly.
  6. Support engine using floor jack and block of wood.
  7. Remove the engine mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  8. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  9. Remove the exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement in Engine Exhaust.

  11. Disconnect the engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT) electrical connection.
  12. Remove the valve rocker arm cover. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  13. Important: When removing valve train components keep them in order. Do this to ensure that the components are installed in the same locations and with the same mating surfaces as when removed.

  14. Remove the rocker arms and pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  15. Remove the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  16. Remove the generator rear brace.
  17. Remove the power steering pump. Position the pump aside with the lines attached. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Power Steering Systems.

  19. Remove the radiator inlet pipe. Refer to Radiator Outlet Pipe Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  20. Remove the ignition coil assembly. Refer to Ignition Control Module Replacement in Engine Controls - 2.2 L..

  21. Object Number: 182923  Size: SH
  22. Remove the accessory bracket.
  23. Disconnect the secondary ignition wires from the spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement in Engine Controls - 2.2 L.

  24. Object Number: 183438  Size: SH
  25. Remove the cylinder head bolts.
  26. Remove the cylinder head.
  27. Clean the following components:
  28. • Head gasket surface
    • Valve rocker arm cover gasket surface
    • Threads

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 2480  Size: SH

    Important: Install the cylinder head gasket with the words THIS SIDE UP showing. Do not use sealer on the gasket.

  1. Install the cylinder head gasket to the block.
  2. Use a socket in order to push the cylinder head gasket over the rear dowel pin.

  3. Object Number: 1977  Size: SH
  4. Carefully guide the cylinder head into place over the dowel pins. This operation may require an assistant.

  5. Object Number: 2483  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

    Important: Use J 36660-A in order to tighten all the cylinder head bolts an additional 90 degrees in sequence.

  6. Use the following sequence in order to tighten the cylinder head bolts:
  7. Tighten

    1. Tighten bolt 1 to 63 N·m (46 lb ft).
    2. Tighten bolt 2 to 58 N·m (43 lb ft).
    3. Tighten bolt 3 to 58 N·m (43 lb ft).
    4. Tighten bolt 4 to 63 N·m (46 lb ft).
    5. Tighten bolt 5 to 63 N·m (46 lb ft).
    6. Tighten bolt 6 to 58 N·m (43 lb ft).
    7. Tighten bolt 7 to 58 N·m (43 lb ft).
    8. Tighten bolt 8 to 63 N·m (46 lb ft).
    9. Tighten bolt 9 to 63 N·m (46 lb ft).
    10. Tighten bolt 10 (stud bolt) to 58 N·m (43 lb ft).
    11. Then tighten all bolts an additional 90 degrees.
  8. Install the rocker arms and push rods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  9. Install the valve rocker arm cover. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  10. Connect the secondary ignition wires to the spark plugs.

  12. Install the accessory bracket.
  13. Install the ignition coil assembly. Refer to Ignition Control Module Replacement in Engine Controls - 2.2L.

  14. Object Number: 182862  Size: SH
  15. Install the radiator inlet pipe. Refer to Radiator Outlet Pipe Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  16. Install the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Power Steering System.

  17. Object Number: 193510  Size: SH
  18. Connect the engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT) electrical connection.
  19. Install the exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  20. Install the generator rear brace.
  21. Install the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  22. Install the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  23. Install the engine mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  24. Remove floor jack supporting engine.
  25. Install the air cleaner outlet duct and resonator assembly.
  26. Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  27. Connect the negative battery cable.
  28. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 16 N·m (12 lb ft).

  29. Refill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
