Before reassembling the oil pump drive shaft assembly,
be sure to inspect the spacer. The oil pump drive shaft spacer (the spacer
is pressed onto the shaft and is part of the shaft assembly) could be loose,
missing, or broken. Broken spacers have been known to cause damage to the
oil pump shaft, the turbine shaft, the channel plate, the control valve body
and the torque converter. This damage results in metal debris throughout the
transaxle. The control valve body must be thoroughly cleaned or replaced.
The same applies to the clutches and the pressure switch assembly.
If the oil pump drive shaft spacer is found to be damaged, inspect the
oil pump shaft, the turbine shaft, the channel plate, the control valve body
and the torque converter. All seals, gaskets, fiber clutches and the converter
must be replaced. All parts must be cleaned and the control valve body will
need disassembling and cleaning or replacement as well. The transaxle cooler
and lines also must be flushed.
