Some owners of the above vehicles with a Hydra-Matic® 3T40 transaxle (built between Julian dates 9270-9292) may comment the vehicle slips in reverse, no reverse, slips in D1, or no D1 range.

Cause

The above condition may be due to a condition with the reverse oil pipe seal assembly (120) being damaged and causing extra clearance between the seal and the low and reverse clutch housing.

Correction


(1)	GOOD Reverse Oil Pipe Seal Assembly (120)
(2)	DAMAGED Reverse Oil Pipe Seal Assembly (120)

Remove the reverse oil pipe seal assembly (120) and inspect.

•	If the seal looks like item 1, and it was fully seated, the seal was not the cause of the above concern. Replace the seal with a new one and continue diagnosis.

•	If the seal is damaged and looks like item 2, the seal is the likely cause of the concern and must be replaced.

Replace the reverse oil pipe seal assembly (120), O-ring seal (145) and oil seal backup washer (144) to correct this condition. Refer to the on-vehicle repair procedure in the Automatic Transaxle subsection of the Transmission/Transaxle section of the Service Manual. Inspect and replace any other parts that show potential damage or quality concerns.
