Stripes or Decals

The stripes and decals are adhered to painted surfaces by a pressure sensitive adhesive.

The use of a wetting solution aids in the lifting and the positioning of the stripe or the decal during installation. The wetting solution ensures a better bond between the stripe or decal and the panel assembly. Use a wetting solution when you apply any large stripe and decal package.

Notice: Allow freshly painted surfaces to dry thoroughly before installing a stripe or a decal. Residual solvents in freshly painted surfaces can lead to subsequent blistering problems when the stripe or the decal is applied before the complete release of the solvents.

Notice: Use of harsh chemicals when cleaning can damage exterior lamps. Suggested cleaners are a mild soap and water, or Varnish Makers and Painters (VM&P) Naptha. VM&P Naptha is a specific type of naptha and should not be substituted by any other naptha.

Keep the body surfaces and decals at temperatures between 21°-38°C (70°-100°F) prior to installation. If the temperature is below 21°C (70°F) the decal may not adhere to the body surface properly. Use auxiliary heat sources when necessary.

You may apply stripes or decals using the dry method. Use the wet method if the dry method does not result in an air bubble free application. This may be the case with large graphics packages.

Use the wet method in order to apply the stripes or decals that are applied on flexible surfaces (fascias, etc.). This will reduce the formation of air bubbles under the decal due to the outgassing potential of the flexible materials. An exception to this rule is the application of a stripe or decal to a TPO fascia. Use the dry method to install a stripe or decal onto the TPO material.

The following equipment and materials, or thier equivalents, are necessary for a quality stripe or decal installation:

    • A wetting solution
A wetting solution may be one of the following types:
       - A foaming type of window cleaner that does not contain ammonia
       - A prepared solution of 7.4 ml (0.25 fl oz) of liquid detergent per 0.95 liter (1 quart) of water
    • A silicone, wax, and grease remover
    • Varnish Makers and Painters (VM&P) naptha
    • Isopropyl alcohol
    • A plastic or hard rubber squeegee 75-100 mm (3-4 in) wide
Treat any sharp or rough edges in order to prevent scratching of the stripe or decal.
    • A water bucket and sponge, or a spray bottle
    • 800 grit or finer sandpaper of a wet or a dry type
    • A heat gun or infrared heat lamp
    • A clean, lint-free wiping cloth
    • A sharp knife or a razor blade
    • A pair of scissors
    • A fine pin or a needle
    • A marking pencil

Stripe or Decal Removal

  1. Remove the following components:
  2. • Necessary moldings or trim
    • Molding attaching clips
    • Handles
    • Sidemarker lamps
    • Other parts that overlap the stripe or the decal.
  3. Clean the following areas, as needed:
  4. • The repair surfaces
    • The adjacent panels
    • The openings

Notice: To avoid damaging the paint finish, do not use pointed or sharp instruments to remove the stripe or the decal.

  5. Start at one edge and peel the stripe in order to remove the stripe or decal from the painted surface.
  6. Application of heat to the stripe or decal at the point of removal will aid the removal operation.

  7. Remove all traces of adhesive residue from the painted surfaces using the following removal solvents:
  8. • Silicone
    • Wax
    • Grease
  9. Use the following solvents or equivalent:
  10. • Prep-Sol
    • Acryli-Clean
    • Pre-Kleano

Stripe or Decal Installation -- Wet Method

Notice: To prevent possible vehicle, stripe or decal damage, always refer to manufacturer's packaged instructions.

  1. Clean the painted surface using the following types of removers:
  2. • Silicone
    • Wax
    • Grease
  3. Use the following or equivalent removers:
  4. • Prep-Sol
    • Acryli-Clean
    • Pre-Kleano
  5. Remove any imperfections that may show through the stripe or decal.
  6. Clean the area where the stripe or decal will be applied with a 50/50 mixture of isopropyl alcohol and water.
  7. Wipe the panel surface using a clean cloth while the solvent is still wet. Allow the panel surface to dry.
  8. Apply the wetting solution to the area where you are installing the stripe or decal. Remove the backing material of the stripe or the decal as necessary.
  9. Apply the wetting solution on the adhesive side of the stripe or decal.
  10. Apply the strip or decal to the panel. The wetting solution allows the decal or stripe to moved for proper positioning on the panel surface.
  11. Working from the center where possible, squeegee the stripe or decal into position. Apply additional wetting solution as needed in order to ease installation.
  12. Apply heat to the stripe or decal at the recessed areas. Press the stripe or decal into the recess in order to obtain a firm bond.
  13. Use adequate light reflection in order to inspect the stripe or decal from a critical angle. This technique detects any irregularities that may have developed during the installation.
  14. Remove all air bubbles by piercing the bubble with one of the following items:
  15. • A safety pin
    • A needle
    • A tool with the same size piercing tip
  16. Pierce the bubble on the outer edge. Force the air out through the opposite edge using the blade of the squeegee.
  17. Install any previously removed components. Clean the components as required.
