Makes 🢒 Chevrolet 🢒 2000 🢒 Cavalier 🢒 Steering 🢒 Steering Wheel and Column - Tilt 🢒 Park Lock System Check
  1. Open the driver's side door. Ensure the driver's side door remains open.
  2. Apply the park brake in order to prevent the vehicle from rolling.
  3. Tilt the column to the full UP tilt position.
  4. Verify that the ignition key is not in the lock cylinder.
  5. Verify that the shift lever does not move from PARK by pulling on the shift lever.

    6. If you are able to move the shift lever from PARK, refer to Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Adjustment in Automatic Transaxle 3T40 or Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Adjustment in Automatic Transaxle 4T40-E/4T45-E.

  6. Insert the ignition key into the lock cylinder. Verify that the following conditions exist:
    7. • The key chime/alarm is ON.
    • The key chime/alarm is sounding.
  7. Turn the ignition key to RUN. Do not start the engine. Verify that the instrument panel lights turn ON.
  8. Verify that the shift lever does not move from PARK by pulling on the shift lever.

    9. If you are able to move the shift lever from PARK, refer to Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Adjustment in Automatic Transaxle 3T40 or Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Adjustment in Automatic Transaxle 4T40-E/4T45-E.

  9. Apply the brake pedal.
  10. Complete the following steps in order to test the shift lever:
    11. 10.1. Move the shift lever from PARK to LOW 1.
    10.2. Move the shift lever from LOW 1 to NEUTRAL.
  11. Try to turn the ignition key to OFF-LOCK.
  12. Verify that the following conditions occur:
    13. • The ignition key does not rotate to OFF-LOCK.
    • The key does not remove from the ignition switch.
    • If the key removes from the ignition switch, refer to Ignition Lock Cylinder Replacement - On Vehicle in Steering Wheel and Column-Tilt.
  13. Without moving the key, return the shift lever to PARK.
  14. Use the following procedure in order to unload the system:
    15. 14.1. Turn the ignition key towards RUN.
    14.2. Turn the ignition key to OFF-LOCK.
    14.3. Remove the key from the ignition switch.
  15. If the following conditions occur, refer to Console Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console and Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Adjustment in Automatic Transaxle 3T40 or Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Adjustment in Automatic Transaxle 4T40-E/4T45-E:
    16. • The shift lever does not move into PARK.
    • You are unable to remove the key.
  16. If the key is removed, verify that the key chime/alarm is OFF.

    17. If the key chime/alarm is ON, refer to Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Adjustment in Automatic Transaxle 3T40 or Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Adjustment in Automatic Transaxle 4T40-E/4T45-E.

  17. Tilt the steering column to the full DOWN tilt position.
  18. Verify that the ignition key is not in the lock cylinder.
  19. Verify that the shift lever does not move from PARK by pulling on the shift lever.

    20. If you are able to move the shift lever from PARK, refer to Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Adjustment in Automatic Transaxle 3T40 or Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Adjustment in Automatic Transaxle 4T40-E/4T45-E.

  20. Insert the ignition key into the lock cylinder. Verify that the following conditions exist:
    21. 20.1. The key chime/alarm is ON.
    20.2. The key chime/alarm is sounding.
  21. Turn the ignition key to RUN. Do not start the engine. Verify that the instrument panel lights turn ON.
  22. Use the following steps in order to test the shift lever:
    23. 22.1. Move the shift lever from PARK to LOW 1.
    22.2. Move the shift lever from LOW 1 to NEUTRAL.
  23. Try to turn the ignition key to OFF-LOCK.
  24. Verify that the following conditions occur:
    25. • The ignition key does not rotate to OFF-LOCK.
    • The key does not remove from the ignition switch.
    • If the key removes from the ignition switch, refer to Ignition Lock Cylinder Replacement - On Vehicle in Steering Wheel and Column-Tilt.
  25. Without moving the key, return the shift lever to PARK.
  26. Use the following procedure in order to unload the system:
    27. 26.1. Turn the ignition key towards RUN.
    26.2. Turn the ignition key to OFF-LOCK.
    26.3. Remove the key from the ignition switch.
  27. If the following conditions occur, refer to Console Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console and Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Adjustment in Automatic Transaxle 3T40 or Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Adjustment in Automatic Transaxle 4T40-E/4T45-E:
    28. • The shift lever does not move into PARK.
    • You are unable to remove the key.
  28. If the key is removed, verify that the key chime/alarm is OFF.

    29. If the key chime/alarm is ON, refer to Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Adjustment in Automatic Transaxle 3T40 or Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Adjustment in Automatic Transaxle 4T40-E/4T45-E.

  29. If you make any adjustments to the system, perform a park lock system test again in order to ensure proper operation of the park lock system.
