Is the drive axle joint OK?

Go to Step 2

Repair or replace the worn or damaged drive axle joint. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Outer Joint and Boot Replacement , or Wheel Drive Shaft Inner Joint and Boot Replacement in Wheel Drive Shafts.

Has the knock disappeared?

--

System OK

Go to Step 3

1. Remove the transaxle assembly. Refer to Transmission Replacement .
2. Check for a worn side gear or pinion gear bores in the differential case.

Is the counterbore OK?

--

System OK

Go to Step 4

Repair or replace the worn differential case. Refer to Differential Case Disassemble in the M86/M94 Section of the Transmission Unit Repair Manual.

Has the knock disappeared?

--

System OK
