Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Pull and hold the cable towards the rear of the car in order to create slack in the cable.
  3. Bend the tang (2) on the connector (1) in order to allow cable removal.
  4. Disconnect the cable (3) from the connector (1).
  5. Remove the safety stands. Lower the vehicle.

  7. Remove the console. Refer to Console Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console. If you are repairing a Pontiac, remove the shifter boot. Refer to Console Replacement in Interior Trim.
  8. Move the park brake lever to the OFF position.

  10. Remove the cable conduit end fitting (2) from the handle assembly (1).

  11. Object Number: 169065  Size: SH
  12. Pull the cable (3) until the notch on the ratchet (1) is visible through the cover plate opening (4).
  13. Push the pawl spring downward toward the notch in the ratchet.
  14. Release the cable (3) slowly in order to allow the notch (1) to catch the leg of the spring (5).
  15. Remove the front parking brake cable button (2) from the reel assembly.
  16. Disconnect the electrical connector.

  18. Remove the nuts securing the lever (2).
  19. Remove the lever (2).

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 169065  Size: SH
  1. Ensure that the pawl spring (5) is properly engaged.
  2. • Pull the cable until the notch on the ratchet (1) is visible through the cover plate opening (4).
    • Push the pawl spring (5) downward toward the notch in the ratchet (1).
    • Release the cable slowly to allow the notch to catch the leg of the spring (5).

  3. Install the front parking brake cable (4) to the lever assembly (2) and secure the cable conduit fittings into the lever assembly (2).
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the parking brake lever (2) and attaching nuts (1).
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the parking brake lever nuts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  7. Connect the electrical connector.
  8. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  9. Connect the cable (4) to the connector (2).
  10. Remove the safety stands. Lower the vehicle.
  11. Notice: Parking brake adjustment is not necessary. This is a self adjusting system and damage may result from attempting to adjust or modify this system in any way. It may be necessary to adjust the rear brakes to obtain the proper tension in the system.

  12. Fully apply and release the hand brake 4-6 times in order to activate the self adjust system.
  13. Install the console. Refer to Console Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console. If you are repairing a Pontiac, install the shifter boot. Refer to Console Replacement in Interior Trim.
