Removal Procedure

  1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Remove the tie rod from the steering knuckle. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement in Power Steering System.
  4. Remove the hub and bearing assembly. Refer to Front Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement .

  5. Object Number: 491774  Size: SH
  6. Remove the bolts (3) and nuts (6) that attach the steering knuckle (4) to the strut (2).
  7. Remove the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle. Refer to Lower Control Arm Ball Joint Replacement .
  8. Remove the steering knuckle (4) from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the steering knuckle (4) to the vehicle.
  2. Install the lower ball joint to the steering knuckle. Refer to Lower Control Arm Ball Joint Replacement .
  3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the bolts (3) and the nuts (6) attaching the steering knuckle (4) to the strut (2).
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts (6) to 180 N·m (133 lb ft).

  6. Install the hub and bearing assembly. Refer to Front Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement .
  7. Install the tie rod to the steering knuckle. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement in Power Steering System.
  8. Install the tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  9. Inspect the front wheel alignment. Refer to Wheel Alignment Measurement in Wheel Alignment.
