PULSE WIPER PHANTOM WIPE OXIDATION-WIPER SW.CONTACTS

Model and Year 1984 CAVALIER

CONDITION

Some 1984 Cavalier models equipped with pulse wipers (CD4 option) may experience a false (phantom) wipe when the turn signals are operated. This will happen with the wiper control in the "OFF" position.

CAUSE

The false wipe is caused by oxidation of the wiper switch contacts, which results in a high resistance condition.

CORRECTION

To repair this condition, install a new pulse wiper switch, P/N 7848195 for a standard column or P/N 7848196 for a tilt column. DO NOT use the old switches with P/N 7843025 or P/N 7844427. The new wiper switches have silver contacts to prevent oxidation and maintain continuity in the closed position.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
