VEHICLE I.D. NUMBER FORMAT VIN FORMAT CHANGE

MODEL AND YEAR: ALL 1987 VEHICLES

Effective with the 1987 model year, the GM Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) format will be modified for all Chevrolet carlines. The changes will be made to VIN position #6 and #7 which displayed the passenger car body style in 1986.

Commencing with 1987 start of production, a one (1) position numeric code in the 6th position will identify the body style as defined below:

CODE DEFINITION BODY STYLE ---- ---------- ---------- 1 Two door coupe/sedan 27,37,97 2 Two door hatchback 08,77,87 3 Two door convertible 67 5 Four door sedan 19,69 6 Four door hatchback 68 8 Four door station wagon 35

The 7th position of the passenger car VIN will define the restraint system. For 1987 the following are applicable:

CODE DEFINITION

1 Manual belts 4 Automatic belts (Passive Restraints)

This change will be made since additional restraint systems will be introduced beginning with the 1987 model year.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
