If a condition is experienced on 1985 Impala/Caprice or 1986 Caprice of intermittent or totally inoperative fuel and/or water temperature gages loose instrument panel retaining clips may be the cause. The retaining clips hold the gage in the instrument panel housing, and provide electrical contact between the instrument panel printed circuit and the gage.
If the above condition is experienced by a vehicle operator the retaining clips should be inspected to insure they fit tightly and make a good electrical connection.
To check the retaining clips, remove the instrument panel gage cluster per Service Manual instructions. Check for loose clips on the back of the instrument panel. If the clips are loose, reinstall them being sure they are tight. Replace the gage cluster.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
