DOOR LOCK CYL.FREEZE-UP REPAIR LOCK CYL.GROMMET

A CONDITION MAY DEVELOP ON SOME 1983 OSHAWA BUILT 'B' CARS, WHERE THE PRESENCE OF WATER OR MOISTURE IN THE DRIVER'S DOOR LOCK CYLINDER RESULTS IN IT FREEZING. VEHICLES REPORTED WITH THIS CONDITION WERE FOUND TO HAVE AN IMPROPER FIT OF THE GROMMET WHICH SEATS ITSELF BETWEEN THE LOCK CYLINDER AND DOOR SKIN. THIS WAS DUE TO THE DRIVER'S DOOR LOCK CYLINDER FIXTURE HOLE BEING ELONGATED. THE ELONGATED FIXTURE HOLE ALLOWED MOVEMENT OR IMPROPER POSITIONING OF THE GROMMET. THIS PRODUCED SAGS OR CRACKS WHICH ALLOWED MOISTURE TO SEEP INTO THE CYLINDER. THE SOURCE HAVE CORRECTED THE STAMPING FIXTURE AND THE OSHAWA PLANTS REPORT NO FURTHER CONDITIONS SHOULD EXIST AFTER THE FOLLOWING V.I.N. BREAK POINTS. CHEVROLET - 1N199861 PONTIAC - 7L703282 THE CONDITION CAN BE CORRECTED BY USING THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE: 1) REMOVE THE DOOR TRIM PAD, HARDWARE AND LOCK CYLINDER AS OUTLINED IN SECTION 5 OF THE FISHER BODY SERVICE MANUAL. 2) CLEAN AND LUBRICATE THE LOCK CYLINDER. 3) CHECK THE LOCK CYLINDER GROMMET FOR DISFIGURMENT. REWORK THE GROMMET (REPLACE IF NECESSARY) AND POSITION IT ON THE LOCK CYLINDER. 4) SPREAD A SMALL AMOUNT OF RTV SEALER AROUND THE GROMMET. 5) REPOSITION THE CYLINDER IN THE DOOR FIXTURE HOLE. ENSURE A GOOD CYLINDER TO DOOR SKIN SEAL. 6) REINSTALL THE DOOR TRIM HARDWARE. 7) LUBRICATE THE LOCK CYLINDER WITH A LIBERAL APPLICATION OF MOISTURE DISPLACING LUBRICANT (D.P.L.) GM PART NO. 992880. FOR WARRANTY PURPOSES, USE THE APPLICABLE LABOUR OPERATIONS AND TIMES PUBLISHED IN THE GM OF CANADA LABOUR TIME GUIDES.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
