Beginning early in the 1983 model year, the 700-R4 transmission turbine shaft, which is pressed into the input clutch housing, was redesigned to accommodate a 245mm diameter converter assembly. The first design, which is still used in some applications, is designed to accommodate a 298mm diame- ter converter assembly (Fiqure 1).
When servicing any THM 700-R4 transmission that necessitates replacing the input clutch housing refer to the following chart for ordering parts:

If the retainer assembly-ball check valve capsule located in the spline end of the turbine shaft or the turbine shaft "O" ring should have to be replaced, order replacement parts as per the following chart:

Follow your service manual guidelines when installing the retainer assembly-ball check capsule. The turbine shaft "O" ring should not be installed until after the oil pump assembly is installed to prevent damage to the "O" ring.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
