Subject: | Revised Ignition Relay Diagnosis |
Models: | 2001-2002 Chevrolet Camaro, Corvette |
2001-2002 Pontiac Firebird |
This bulletin is being issued to revise the Ignition Relay Diagnosis in the Engine Controls sub-section of the Service Manual. Please replace the current information in the Service Manual with the following information.
The following information has been updated within SI. If you are using a paper version of this Service Manual, please make a reference to this bulletin on the affected page.
The ignition relay supplies battery positive voltage to the following components:
• | Evaporative emissions (EVAP) system |
• | Ignition modules/coils |
• | Fuel injectors |
• | Mass airflow (MAF) sensor |
• | Oxygen sensors |
• | A/C clutch relay |
• | Transmission control solenoids |
If the ignition relay fails to close:
• | Engine will crank, but does not run |
• | Scan tool data will be available |
• | Instrument panel lights will illuminate |
The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.
This step tests the battery positive voltage circuit of the ignition relay.
This step tests the ignition 1 voltage circuit of the ignition relay.
This step tests the coil ground circuit of the ignition relay.
This step isolates the circuits from the ignition relay. All of the circuits at the relay are good if the test lamp illuminates.

The ignition relay supplies voltage to the following components:
• | The ignition control modules (ICM) |
• | The fuel injectors |
• | The powertrain control module (PCM) |
• | The mass airflow (MAF) sensor |
• | Transmission control solenoids |
• | The A/C clutch relay |
If the ignition relay fails to close, the following will occur:
• | The engine cranks, but does not run |
• | The scan data will be available |
• | The instrument panel lamps will illuminate |

This step tests the battery positive voltage circuit of the ignition relay.
This step tests the ignition 1 positive voltage circuit of the ignition relay.
This step tests the coil ground circuit of the ignition relay.
