Important: In order to avoid misdiagnosis, check for powertrain control module (PCM) diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). Refer to Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check (3.8L) or Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check (5.7L).

Drive the vehicle.

Does the speedometer display the correct speed?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

Go to Step 3

1. Disconnect the powertrain control module (PCM) connector C2 (V8 VIN G) or C1 (V6 VIN K).
2. Connect a 10A fused jumper between the PCM connector circuit 817 and ground.
3. Disconnect the instrument cluster.
4. Connect a test lamp between the instrument cluster terminal A3 and terminal B8.
5. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 6

Test for and repair a poor connection in circuit 817 at the PCM and the instrument cluster. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and repair a poor connection?

Go to Step 7

Go to Step 5

Replace the instrument cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement .

Did you complete the replacement?

Go to Step 7

Repair an open or a poor connection in circuit 817 between the instrument cluster and the PCM. Refer to Wiring Repairs or Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you complete the repair?

Operate the system in order to verify the repair.

Did you correct the condition?
