MAIN PILLAR SEAL OF DOOR GLASS EXHIBITS GAPS AT DOOR GLASS

Model and Year: 1987-88 CAMARO CONVERTIBLE

1987 and some early built 1988 Camaro convertibles may exhibit main pillar seal gaps to the door at the lower end of the door glass. The reason is either from the seal being misaligned or the lower end molded detail of the seal has collapsed. The following information outlines and illustrates the procedures which may be used to repair the gaping condition of the seal to the door glass.

Procedure #1 describes how to remove and reposition the seal.

Procedure #2 describes how to reinforce the lower molded detail end of the seal.

Inspect the relationship of the main pillar seal lower end to the door glass to determine the position or condition of the seal, then follow the appropriate procedure to repair.

Procedure #1

MAIN PILLAR SEAL REPOSITIONING (See Figure 1)

1. Remove main pillar seal, using a suitable release agent or heat gun, grasp seal and gently pull while inserting a flat-bladed tool between seal and seal retainer to break cement bond.

2. Scrape excess cement from seal retainer.

3. Apply a continuous bead of 3M (R) Super Weatherstrip Adhesive P/N 08008 or equivalent, to the retainer channel.

4. Install main pillar seal, using a flat-bladed tool, engage seal into new position in retainer.

MAIN PILLAR SEAL REINFORCING (See Figure 2)

1. Remove main pillar seal, about halfway starting at lower end, using a suitable release agent or heat gun, grasp seal and gently pull while inserting a flat-bladed tool between seal and seal retainer to break cement bond.

2. Install foam seal stuffer (3/8" round x 4" long), inside seal cavity, to reinforce the lower end of the seal.

3. Apply a continuous bead of 3M Super Weatherstrip Adhesive (R), P/N 08008 or equivalent, to the retainer channel.

4. Main pillar seal, using a flat-bladed tool, engage seal into position in retainer.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
