1987 and some early 1988 Camaro Convertibles may have difficulty in removing the spare tire from its stowage area, due to a interference between the spare tire and the close-out panel installed during the conversion process.
In order to repair the condition, it will be necessary to remove a part of the close-out panel to alleviate the interference condition. The following information outlines and illustrates the procedure required to remove the section of the close-out panel.
TO PREVENT PERSONAL INJURY, SAFETY GLASSES SHOULD BE WORN WHEN CUTTING OUT METAL WITH DIE GRINDER.
1. Unlatch the rear bow and raise it to its full vertical position.
2. Release and raise the tonneau panel to its full vertical position.
3. Pull the welt cord loose from the right side of the tonneau drain through. See Figure 1.
4. Pull the stowage compartment carpet loose from the right side close-out panel in the area to be cut out.
5. Lower and latch the tonneau panel.
6. Open the trunk lid and remove the right side trunk trim panel.
7. Remove the spare tire.
8. Remove the carpet from the back side of the close-out panel.
9. Using a sharp pencil, mark the section of the close-out panel to be cut out according to the measurements as shown in Figure 2.
10. Using 1/2 inch drill bit, drill holes at each upper corner of the section to be cut out.
11. Tape protective covers to painted surfaces of tonneau panel and quarter panel.
12. Using a die grinder, cut out the section of the close-out panel as marked in step 9 and remove.
TO PREVENT PERSONAL INJURY, USE EXTREME CARE WHEN WORKING AROUND SHARP EDGES OF CUT METAL.
1. Using zinc chromate, and a brush, prime all edges cut and any bare metal surfaces.
2. Remove protective covers.
3. Carpet to back side of close-out panel.

16. Lower and latch the rear bow.
Use the applicable operation from the Canadian Labour Time Guide and claim 0.8 hours.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
