Important: Do not utilize the Tech 2 service fast learn (SFL) adapt procedure. The procedure will not run properly for all 2006 RWD 6-speed automatic transmissions. Instead, perform the following drive cycle, which is also published in the service preliminary information (PI) document 1816258. This driving procedure will produce similar SFL adaptive results. The Tech 2 SFL adapt procedure is not functioning properly and should not be used to learn shift adapts.
Service Fast Learn Adapts is a procedure for 6-speed automatic transmissions in which a series of driving maneuvers are used to allow the transmission control module (TCM) to learn individual clutch characteristics. Once the clutch data is learned, Service Fast Learn Adapts translates it into the adaptive data cells, which the TCM uses for clutch control during shifts.
When running the SFL adapts procedure with the Tech 2, the procedure may fail. The following drive procedure can be successfully used as a substitute:
The drive procedure is required when:
• | The TCM calibration is changed. |
• | Internal transmission repairs such as valve body or control solenoid w/TCM replacement or overhaul. |
The drive procedure is NOT required when:
The transmission is replaced. Replacement transmission assemblies already have the adapts set by the transmission assembly plant.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
• | Drive maneuvers should be performed when the transmission oil temperature is at least 40°C (104°F). |
• | Transmission oil level is properly set before starting drive cycles. |
• | Initial up shifts may be erratic for several drive cycles. They should improve significantly with repeated maneuvers. |
• | At the start of the drive cycles, check for ECM or TCM, DTCs and be sure the MIL is not be illuminated. |
Important: Drive cycle requires five light throttle accelerations to 40 km/h (25 mph) and five light throttle accelerations to 63 km/h (40 mph).
If the garage shifts (Park to Reverse, Park to Drive, Reverse to Drive, Drive to Reverse) feel like they are delayed or are harsh, garage shift adapts can also be performed.
Important: All garage shifts should be performed with the vehicle stopped, foot on the brake and engine at idle.
At the end of these maneuvers, the vehicle may still experience some minor driveability issues, but should learn improved shifting performance over the next several key cycles and driving time. Coach the customer about the transmission's ability to self correct shifting issues or concerns. The transmission adapts are always functional and operate at transmission oil temperatures above 40°C (104°F).
