  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. For vehicles that are equipped with automatic transmissions, place the shift lever in the PARK position.
  3. For vehicles that are equipped with manual transmissions, apply the park brake.
  4. Place the multifunction, turn signal switch in the left and right turn positions.

Do both sides of the position lamps operate properly?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

Do the park lamps operate properly?

Go to Step 4

Do the turn signals operate properly?

Go to Step 5

Are both sides of the position lamps inoperative?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Remove the standing lamp relay.
  3. Connect a test lamp between the standing lamp relay switch side supply voltage circuit and a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Connect a test lamp between the standing lamp relay coil side supply voltage circuit and a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Connect a test lamp between the standing lamp relay coil side supply voltage circuit and the standing lamp relay control circuit.
  2. Place the multifunction, turn signal switch in the left and right turn positions.

Does the test lamp turn ON and OFF with the turn signal switch position?

  1. Connect a 10-amp fused jumper between the switch side supply voltage circuit of the standing lamp relay and the coil side supply voltage circuit of the standing lamp relay.
  2. Place the multifunction, turn signal switch in the left and right turn positions.

Do the position lamps illuminate with the turn signal switch position?

  1. Remove the inoperable position relay.
  2. Connect a test lamp between the position relay switch side supply voltage circuit and a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Connect a test lamp between the inoperable position relay coil side supply voltage circuit and a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Connect a test lamp between the position relay coil side supply voltage circuit and a good ground.
  2. Turn the inoperable position lamp side turn signal ON and OFF several times.

Does the test lamp turn ON and OFF with the turn signal switch?

Test the standing lamp relay control circuit for an open or for a short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
