Some 1978-1981 Cadillacs equipped with a diesel engine and a 200 or 200C transmission (refer to Figure 1) may experience erratic shift patterns. This condition may be reported as a late shift or the most severe condition of no shift. An erratic shift pattern may be more noticeable as the transmission approaches normal operating temperature. This condition may be caused by a damaged or rolled governor cover seal (refer to Figure 2) resulting in incorrect governor pressure.
To repair this condition, remove the governor cover and inspect the inner governor cover seal (Figure 2 - Item 37). If damaged or rolled, replace the entire governor cover assembly (P/N 8628933) which includes the inner and outer seals (Figure 2 - Items 35 & 37). Important: The seals must be well lubricated with petrolatum (petroleum jelly) to prevent damage or rolling during installation.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
