General Motors of Canada has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists on some 1985 Chevrolet Cavalier and Pontiac Sunbird models equipped with RPO LQ5 2.0L L4 engine less the underhood insulation blanket.
The engine air cleaner plastic trim cover on the involved vehicles, may become detached from the air cleaner assembly and fall forward on the exhaust manifold.
Should this occur while the vehicle is being operated an engine compartment fire could occur without prior warning.
To correct this condition dealers and owners are being requested to remove and discard the engine air cleaner plastic trim cover. Owners are being requested to return to your dealership in approximately 90 days to have an engine identifier decal installed in lieu of the plastic trim cover.
Involved are certain 1985 Chevrolet Cavalier and Pontiac Sunbird models equipped with RPO LQ5 2.0L L4 TBI engine (VIN Code 'P') less underhood insulation blanket within the following parameters:

All affected vehicles have been identified by the VIN listing provided to involved dealers with this bulletin. Any dealer not receiving a listing was not shipped any of the affected vehicles.
Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.
Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used vehicle inventory, or it is, in your Dealership for service in the future, you should take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before reselling or releasing the vehicle.
Owners of vehicles recently sold from your new vehicle inventory are to be contacted by the Dealer, and arrangements made to make the required modification according to instructions contained in this bulletin.
Refer to Section 4 of the Service Policies and Procedures Manual for the detailed procedure on handling Product Campaigns. Dealers are requested to complete the campaign on all transfers as soon as possible.
All owners of record at the time of campaign release are shown on the attached computer listing and have been notified by first class mail from General Motors. The listings provided are for campaign activity only and should not be used for any other purpose.
The air cleaner trim decals will be forwarded to all GM dealers in approximately 90 days.
Credit for the campaign work performed will be paid upon receipt of a properly completed campaign claim card or RAPID terminal transmission in accordance with the following:
Repair Code Operation Time Allowance ----------- --------- -------------- 2A Remove air cleaner plastic .3 trim cover and discard or install decal.
When decals are available and the customer brings his vehicle in, process it as 2A if the customer has removed the trim cover. If Dealer has already claimed for removal of trim cover (unsold vehicle) process an "add-credit" for .3 to cover the installation of the decal.
1. Raise hood.
2. Remove air cleaner plastic trim cover (Refer Figure 1). No further action required until the decal identifier which will replace the plastic trim cover are available.
3. Before attaching the decal identifier replacing the plastic trim cover, clean top of air cleaner as it must be free of dirt and grease. Instructions for installing the air cleaner decal may be found on the decal. Care must be taken to prevent wrinkles and air bubbles.
4. Install campaign completion label.
5. Close hood.
Clean surface of radiator upper mounting panel and apply a Campaign Identification Label. Make sure the correct campaign number is inserted on the label. This will indicate that the campaign has been completed.

To prevent this from occuring on your vehicle, please remove the engine air cleaner plastic trim cover and discard. In the event assistance is required in removing the trim cover, please contact your GM Dealer who will perform this function at no charge to you.
Please contact your GM Dealer in approximately 90 days and a replacement identifier decal will be installed on your vehicle at no charge to you.
Instructions have been sent to your GM Dealer. The labour time to do the work will be about 15 minutes. Please ask your dealer if you wish to know how much additional time will be necessary to process your vehicle.
This letter identifies your vehicle. Presentation of this letter to your Dealer will assist their Service personnel in completing the necessary correction to your vehicle in the shortest possible time.
Further assistance, if required, may be obtained from the General Motors Zone Office nearest you. Your vehicle Owner's Manual provides the location and phone number of each respective Zone Office.
