Removal Procedure

Caution: Refer to Brake Dust Caution in the Preface section.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.

  3. Object Number: 1969969  Size: SH
  4. Using a backup wrench on the brake caliper guide pins, remove the guide pin bolts (1).
  5. Notice: Support the brake caliper with heavy mechanic wire, or equivalent, whenever it is separated from its mount and the hydraulic flexible brake hose is still connected. Failure to support the caliper in this manner will cause the flexible brake hose to bear the weight of the caliper, which may cause damage to the brake hose and in turn may cause a brake fluid leak.

  6. Remove the brake caliper and support with heavy mechanics wire or equivalent.

  8. Remove the inner brake pad (1).
  9. Remove the outer brake pad (2).

  10. Object Number: 1969973  Size: SH
  11. Remove the brake pad springs (1).

  12. Object Number: 1969978  Size: SH
  13. Remove the upper brake caliper bracket bolt (1).
  14. Remove the lower brake caliper bracket bolt (2).

  15. Object Number: 1969987  Size: SH
  16. Remove the brake caliper bracket (1).
  17. Inspect the disc brake hardware. Refer to Rear Disc Brake Mounting and Hardware Inspection.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 1969978  Size: SH
  1. Install the brake caliper bracket (1).
  2. Important: If reusing the caliper bracket bolts the threads of the caliper bracket bolts and the threads of the knuckle mounting holes must be free of residue and debris prior to application of threadlocker in order to ensure proper adhesion and fastener retention.

  3. Prepare the bolts and the threaded holes for assembly:
  4. • Thoroughly clean the residue from the bolt threads by using denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry.
    • Thoroughly clean the residue from the threaded holes by using denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry.
    • Apply threadlocker GM P/N 12345493 (Canada P/N 10953488), or equivalent to 2/3 of the threaded length of the lower caliper bracket bolts. Ensure there are no gaps in the threadlocker along the length of the filled area of the bolts.
    • Allow the threadlocker to cure approximately 10 minutes before installation.

  5. Loosely install the upper brake caliper bracket bolt (1).
  6. Loosely install the lower brake caliper bracket bolt (2).
  7. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  8. Tighten the upper and lower brake caliper bracket bolts.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 130 N·m (96 lb ft).

  10. Install the brake pad springs (1).

  12. Install the inner brake pad (1).
  13. Install the outer brake pad (2).

    • Allow the threadlocker to cure approximately 10 minutes before installation.

  17. Install the brake caliper to the caliper bracket.
  18. Using a backup wrench on the brake caliper guide pins, install the guide pin bolts (1).
  19. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  20. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
