Removal Procedure

    Object Number: 1408868 Size: SH
  1. Remove the engine assembly. Refer to Engine Replacement .
  2. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  3. Remove the left cylinder head (218). Refer to Cylinder Head Replacement - Left Side .

    4. Object Number: 1408870 Size: SH
  4. Remove the right cylinder head (218). Refer to Cylinder Head Replacement - Right Side .

    5. Object Number: 1565287 Size: SH
  5. Remove the engine front cover (502). Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .

    6. Object Number: 1272826 Size: SH
  6. Remove the valve lifter guide bolts (211).
  7. Remove the valve lifters and guides. Refer to Valve Lifter Removal .

    8. Object Number: 1649254 Size: SH
  8. Rotate the engine in order to align the timing marks (1 and 2).

    9. Object Number: 1552489 Size: SH
  9. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolts (206).
  10. Remove the timing chain (208) from the camshaft sprocket, and allow the chain to rest on the crankshaft sprocket.

    11. Object Number: 63211 Size: SH
  11. Remove the camshaft retainer bolts and retainer.
  12. Remove the camshaft. Refer to Camshaft Removal .

    13. Important: Rear cover removal is not required, if the camshaft bearings are not being replaced.

  13. If the camshaft bearings need replacement, remove the rear engine cover and gasket. Refer to Engine Rear Cover Replacement .
  14. Clean and inspect the camshaft and camshaft bearings. Refer to Camshaft and Bearings Cleaning and Inspection .
  15. Remove the camshaft bearings if required. Refer to Camshaft Bearing Removal .

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 63211 Size: SH
  1. Install the NEW camshaft bearings, if previously removed. Refer to Camshaft Bearing Installation .
  2. Install the rear engine cover. Refer to Engine Rear Cover Replacement .
  3. Install the camshaft, the camshaft retainer, and the bolts. Refer to Camshaft Installation .

    4. Object Number: 1552489 Size: SH
  4. Install the timing chain (208) to the camshaft sprocket.
  5. Install the camshaft sprocket (205) and bolts (206) to the camshaft. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprockets Installation .

    6. Object Number: 1649254 Size: SH
  6. Ensure that the timing marks (1 and 2) are aligned.

    7. Object Number: 1272826 Size: SH
  7. Install the valve lifters, valve guides, and bolts (211). Refer to Valve Lifter Installation .

    8. Object Number: 1565287 Size: SH
  8. Install the engine front cover (502). Refer to Engine Front Cover Installation .

    9. Object Number: 1408870 Size: SH
  9. Install the right cylinder head (218). Refer to Cylinder Head Installation - Right Side .

    10. Object Number: 1408868 Size: SH
  10. Install the left cylinder head (218). Refer to Cylinder Head Installation - Left Side .
  11. Install the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  12. Install the engine assembly. Refer to Engine Replacement .
  13. Change the engine oil and filter. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
  14. Fill the cooling system to the proper level. Refer to Approximate Fluid Capacities .
  15. Check the engine for fluid leaks.
