DTC P0442 - kw 3.6 driveability EVAP evaporative leak LY7 MIL solenoid vent

Subject:DTC P0442

Models:.

When servicing the vehicle with the VIN you entered, the following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the described symptoms.

Condition/Concern:

When diagnosing a P0442 in a 2004 CTS or 2004 SRX, the diagnostic table says to command the vent solenoid closed, introduce smoke and look for the leak.

Recommendation/Instructions:

There is a problem in the commanded state function. When the solenoid is commanded on, and the Tech 2 states not venting, the vent solenoid is actually OFF or open. When it is commanded off, it is actually ON or closed. This, of course, allows the smoke to exit the vent solenoid, leaving the technician the impression the vent solenoid is at fault. This vehicle is no different. The canister vent solenoid is a normally open valve, and to command the solenoid closed, it must be turned on. The problem lies with the Tech 2 commanded state fuction. Off means ON, and ON means OFF.

.

Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed. If these steps do not resolve the condition, please contact GM TAC for further diagnostic assistance. This diagnostic approach was developed for the vehicle with the VIN you entered and should not be automatically be used for other vehicles with similar symptoms.
