ENGINE OVERHEAT/COOLANT FAN INOPERATIVE

SUBJECT: ENGINE OVERHEAT/COOLANT FAN INOPERATIVE (REPLACE AND UP-SIZE CLG FAN MAXI FUSE)

MODELS: 1996 BUICK SKYLARK 1996 OLDSMOBILE ACHIEVA 1996 PONTIAC GRAND AM

CONDITION:

SOME OWNERS MAY COMMENT ON AN OVERHEATING ENGINE. IN 3.1L (VIN M - RPO L82) APPLICATIONS, THE PCM SHOULD SET DTC P1651 AND THE MIL MAY LIGHT.

CAUSE:

IN SOME OF THE ABOVE LISTED VEHICLES, THE CLG FAN MAXI FUSE (LT GRN, 30A), LOCATED IN THE UNDERHOOD FUSE CENTER, MAY OPEN CAUSING THE COOLANT FAN TO BECOME INOPERATIVE. THE COOLANT FAN MAY TEMPORARILY STALL DURING NORMAL OPERATION DUE TO A RESISTIVE FORCE AGAINST THE COOLANT FAN (EXAMPLE: A LARGE AMOUNT OF WATER HITTING THE FAN). THIS CAN CAUSE A POWER SURGE IN THE 542 CKT THAT MAY OPEN THE CLG FAN MAXI FUSE.

CORRECTION:

THE CLG FAN MAXI FUSE (LT GRN, 30A) SHOULD BE REPLACED WITH AN AMBER, 40A MAXI FUSE, P/N 12065933. THE FUSE BLOCK LABEL SHOULD ALSO BE REPLACED WITH AN UPDATED VERSION, P/N 12191458. ALL SERVICED VEHICLES MUST HAVE THIS NEW LABEL.

IMPORTANT: THIS CLG FAN FUSE VALUE AND FUSE BLOCK LABEL WILL CHANGE IN MID-MODEL YEAR PRODUCTION FROM LT GRN, 30A TO AMBER, 40A.

NOTICE: UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD THE TECHNICIAN REPLACE THE CLG FAN FUSE WITH A FUSE VALUE LARGER THAN AMBER, 40A OR REPLACE ANY OTHER FUSE IN THE VEHICLE WITH ONE OF LARGER VALUE. WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE CHANGE TO THE VALUE OF THE CLG FAN MAXI FUSE, FOLLOW THE ELECTRICAL REPAIR PROCEDURES COVERED IN SECTION 8A-5 OF THE SERVICE MANUAL.
