The following information is issued in an effort to eliminate some confusion regarding manifold gasket replacement on the 1.8L turbo fuel injected (MFI) engine.
The replacement gasket Part Number 10031006 is the only gasket that should be used. Using the standard 1.8L (VIN code 0) gasket will result in a leak.
Before installing ihe gasket, check for the location of the stamped part number on the surface. The gasket should be installed with this number toward the manifold. The gasket appears to be the same in either direction but is not. Installing the gasket backward will result in mismatched bolt hole alignment and seal ring aligment. The bolts can be forced through the gasket but the mismatch in the sealing ring will result in a leak.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
