SOME EARLY MODEL SKYHAWKS WERE BUILT WITH INSUFFICIENT CLEARANCE AT THE TAIL LIGHT OPENING TO ALLOW REMOVAL OF THE TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY FOR BULB REPLACEMENT. IF YOU SHOULD ENCOUNTER THIS CONDITION, THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE SHOULD BE FOLLOWED: 1.OPEN TRUNK LID. 2.FROM INSIDE THE TRUNK, REMOVE FOUR (4) WING NUTS FROM EACH SIDE WHICH RETAIN LAMP HOUSING. ALSO, LOOSEN EIGHT (8) NUTS FROM BUMPER AND FASCIA TO LOOSEN BUMPER AND FASCIA ASSEMBLY. IT MAY ALSO BE NECESSARY TO LOOSEN THE TWO (2) CENTER HOUSING WING NUTS FOR REMOVAL OF LAMP HOUSINGS. 3.PROTECT FASCIA WITH MASKING TAPE. 4.RAISE CAR, LOOSEN BUMPER RETAINING NUTS; SIX (6) UNDER CAR. 5.WITH BUMPER LOOSE, REMOVE TAIL LAMP HOUSINGS, DETACH WIRING AND BULBS. 6.RASP AREAS SHOWN IN ILLUSTRATION 'B', 'C', 'D'. 7.TIGHTEN ALL BUMPER AND FASCIA NUTS. 8.TEST FOR FIT. IF NECESSARY, ADDITIONAL CLEARANCE MAY BE GAINED BY RASPING AREA SHOWN IN ILLUSTRATION. (VIEW 'A'). ** ILLUSTRATION ** WHEN REPLACEMENT OF A BURNED OUT TAIL LAMP BULB(S) IS REQUIRED, IT IS SUGGESTED THAT THE REAR FASCIA BE COVERED TO PREVENT SCRATCHING. BEFORE REMOVING TAIL LAMP ASSEMBLY, APPLY MASKING TAPE OR OTHER SUITABLE COVER TO FASCIA AND LEAVE IT IN POSITION UNTIL THE TAIL LAMP ASSEMBLY IS REINSTALLED.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
