CONDITION: SOME 1982 'J' CARS MAY EXPERIENCE A RATTLING NOISE IN THE PARKING BRAKE HANDLE DUE TO A LOOSENESS IN THE RELEASE ROD AND PAWL WHEN THE LEVER ASSEMBLY IS IN THE 'OFF' POSITION. CORRECTION: 1.OBTAIN A PIECE OF POLYURETHANE FOAM 1 INCH THICK AND 1 INCH IN DIAMETER. 2.COMPRESS AND INSERT THE FOAM INTO THE PARK BRAKE HANDLE SO THE FOAM PRESSES AGAINST THE PAWL AND RELEASE ROD. SEE ILLUSTRATION. 3.CHECK TO MAKE SURE THE RELEASE ROD ACTION IS NOT IMPAIRED AND THE LEVER ASSEMBLY LOCKS PROPERLY IN THE 'ON' POSITION.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
