Engine idle quality on the 1.8L OHC (VIN Code 0) engine is maintained by cutting-off the A/C compressor when the engine idle speed drops below a specific RPM.
From page 1B1, 1982 1.8L Skyhawk OHC Engine Supplement Manual:
"The compressor is also cut-off under certain other engine operating conditions by the A/C control relay: wide open throttle, low ambient temperature, and low engine speed."
If diagnosis of a constantly disengaged A/C compressor clutch determines the cause to be an inoperative A/C compressor control relay, but the relay is not inoperative, the engine idle speed should be checked. If idle speed is not to specification, it should be corrected. (See Section 6E2, Page 6E2-59 of the 1982 1.8L Skyhawk OHC Engine Supplement.)
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
