OIL PAN REPLACEMENT REVISED PROCEDURE

THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE SHOULD BE USED FOR REPLACING THE OIL PAN ON SUBJECT ENGINES INSTEAD OF THE PROCEDURE SHOWN IN SECTION 6A, PAGES 6A-14, OF THE 1982 CAVALIER SHOP MANUAL(ST-366-82). REMOVAL 1.DISCONNECT BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE. 2.REMOVE EXHAUST PIPE SHIELD. 3.RAISE VEHICLE. 4.DRAIN CRANKCASE. 5.DISCONNECT EXHAUST PIPE FROM EXHAUST MANIFOLD. 6.REMOVE A/C BRACE AT STARTER AND AT A/C BRACKET, IF SO EQUIPPED. 7.REMOVE FLYWHEEL COVER. 8.REMOVE STARTER BRACKET AT BLOCK, REMOVE STARTER AND LAY ASIDE. 9.REMOVE A/C BRACE IF EQUIPPED WITH A/C. 10.SUPPORT VEHICLE. 11.REMOVE RIGHT SUPPORT BOLTS(4). LOWER SUPPORT SLIGHTLY TO GAIN CLEARANCE FOR OIL PAN REMOVAL. 12.ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE, REMOVE OIL FILTER AND EXTENSION. 13.REMOVE OIL PAN BOLTS. 14.REMOVE OIL PAN. INSTALLATION NOTICE: PRIOR TO OIL PAN INSTALLATION, CHECK THAT THE SEALING SURFACES ON THE PAN, CYLINDER CASE AND FRONT COVER ARE CLEAN AND FREE OF OIL. IF REINSTALLING OLD PAN, BE SURE THAT ALL LOOSE RTV HAS BEEN REMOVED. MAKE SURE THAT OLD RTV IS REMOVED FROM BLIND ATTACHING HOLES. 1.APPLY A THIN COAT OF RTV SEALANT#1052366 OR EQUIVALENT TO BOTH ENDS OF A NEW REAR OIL PAN SEAL. (SEALANT MUST NOT EXTEND BEYOND TABS OF SEAL.) THEN INSTALL SEAL FIRMLY INTO REAR MAIN BEARING CAP. 2.APPLY A CONTINUOUS 3MM DIAMETER BEAD (APPROX. 1/8") OF RTV SEALANT #1052366 OR EQUIVALENT ON THE OIL PAN SIDE RAILS. THIS BEAD MUST BE IN LINE WITH THE BOLT HOLES AND CIRCLED INBOARD AT EACH HOLE LOCATION. NOTICE: DO NOT APPLY RTV TO THE REAR OIL PAN SEAL MATING SURFACE. 3.APPLY RTV SEALANT#1052366 OR EQUIVALENT TO OIL PAN SURFACE WHICH FITS TO ENGINE FRONT COVER. BE SURE THIS RTV MEETS BOTH SIDE RAIL BEADS. 4.USING CARE TO AVOID DISTURBING THE RTV BEADS, INSTALL OIL PAN TO CYLINDER BLOCK AND TORQUE ALL ATTACHING BOLTS TO SPECIFICATION. NOTICE: RTV MUST BE WET TO THE TOUCH DURING OIL PAN BOLT TORQUING. 5.REPLACE OIL FILTER ADAPTER SEAL AND OIL FILTER ADAPTER IF EQUIPPED WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE, AND INSTALL OIL FILTER. 6.INSTALL EXHAUST PIPE TO EXHAUST MANIFOLD. 7.INSTALL RIGHT SUPPORT BOLTS. 8.INSTALL A/C BRACE. 9.INSTALL STARTER. 10.INSTALL FLYWHEEL COVER. 11.INSTALL A/C BRACE AT A/C BRACKET AND STARTER. 12.LOWER VEHICLE. 13.REFILL CRANKCASE. 14.CONNECT BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE. 15.START ENGINE AND CHECK FOR LEAKS.
