Removal Procedure

Important: This procedure is for servicing valve springs and valve stem seals if you are not removing the cylinder head. If you are removing the cylinder head, refer to Cylinder Head Cleaning and Inspection .

Tools Required

    • J 22794 Spark Plug Port Adapter
    • J 5892-D Valve Spring Compressor (Head On)
  1. Remove the valve rocker arms and the pushrods at the cylinder in order to be serviced. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement
  2. Remove the spark plug at the cylinder to be serviced.

  3. Object Number: 11517  Size: SH
  4. Install the J 22794 to the spark plug hole and apply compressed air in order to hold the valves in place.

  5. Object Number: 1964  Size: SH
  6. Compress the valve spring using the J 5892-D .

  7. Object Number: 28779  Size: SH
  8. Remove the valve stem keys.
  9. Remove the valve spring cap.
  10. Remove the valve spring.
  11. Remove the valve stem oil seal.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 22794 Spark Plug Port Adapter
    • J 5892-D Valve Spring Compressor (Head On)

    Object Number: 28779  Size: SH
  1. Install the valve stem oil seal and seat the seal against the valve spring shim.
  2. Install the valve spring.
  3. Install the valve spring cap.

  4. Object Number: 1964  Size: SH
  5. Compress the valve spring using the J 5892-D
  6. Install the valve stem keys as follows:
  7. 5.1. Use grease in order to hold the keys in place while disconnecting the J 5892-D .
    5.2. Remove the J 22794 .
    5.3. Ensure the keys seat properly in the upper groove of the valve stem.
    5.4. Tap the end of the stem with a plastic faced hammer to seat the keys, if necessary.
    5.5. Install the spark plug.

    Tighten
    Tighten the spark to 20 N·m(15  lb  ft )

  8. Install the valve rocker arms and the pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
