DEFINITION: The VOLT indicator or the CHECK GAGES message with engine outline telltale stays on when the engine is running.

Monitor the system voltage using Scan Tool while the engine is running.

Is the system voltage above the specified value?

More than 10.6 V

Go to Step 2

Turn the engine OFF

Place the ignition in LOCK.

Disconnect the PCM C1 (Oldsmobile) or the PCM C2 (Buick).

Turn ON the ignition.

Is the indicator still on?

Go to Step 4

Are the repairs complete?

Go to Starter and Charging System Check .

Refer to Instrument Cluster Diagnosis.

Repair as needed.

Are the repairs complete?

Go to Starter and Charging System Check .

Check the RED (225) wiring between the PCM and the generator for an open or short to ground.

Check connections at the generator.

Disconnect the battery thermistor connector.

Using a fused jumper, connect terminals A and B or the body harness.

Is the volt indicator still on?

Go to Step 6

Go to Step 7

Check LT BLU (725) between the battery thermistor and the generator for an open.

Check C101 terminal L5 (Oldsmobile) or C101 terminal C6 (Buick) for proper terminal contact.

If OK, replace the generator.

Are the repairs complete?

--

Go to Starter and Charging System Check .

Replace the battery thermistor.

Are the repairs complete?
