Generator Replacement L46/L47

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the rear seat cushion. Refer to Seats and Carpet.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  3. Remove the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  4. Remove the accessory drive belt from the power steering pulley.
  5. Remove the accessory drive belt from the generator.
  6. Remove the upper generator bolts.
  7. Disconnect the battery lead.

  9. Disconnect the voltage regulator connector.
  10. Disconnect the ground strap.
  11. Remove the power steering line bracket to gain access to the generator.
  12. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.

  14. Remove the lower generator bolts.
  15. Remove the air inlet duct.
  16. Remove the generator through the top left side of the engine compartment.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 101160  Size: SH
  1. Install the generator through the top left side of the engine compartment.
  2. Install the air inlet duct.
  3. Install the lower generator bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the lower generator bolts to 38 N·m (28 lb ft).

  5. Install the ground strap.
  6. Install the power steering line bracket.
  7. Install the generator mounting bolts.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the generator mounting bolts to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

  9. Install the generator output terminal nut.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the generator output terminal nut to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  11. Connect the voltage regulator connection.
  12. Install the accessory drive belt.
  13. Install the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  14. Connect the negative battery cable.
  15. Install the rear seat cushion. Refer to Seats and Carpet.

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the rear seat cushion. Refer to Seats and Carpet.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

  3. Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  4. Remove the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .

  6. Remove the rear pencil brace bolts.
  7. Remove the brace.
  8. Remove the generator mounting bolts.

  9. Object Number: 42435  Size: SH
  10. Remove the output terminal nut.
  11. Disconnect the electrical connector.
  12. Remove the generator.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 42435  Size: SH
  1. Install the generator.
  2. Connect the electrical connector.
  3. Install the output terminal nut.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the generator mounting bolts.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  7. Install the rear pencil brace.
  8. Install the rear pencil brace bolt.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  10. Install the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .
  11. Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  12. Install the rear seat cushion. Refer to Seats and Carpet.
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the cable nut to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the rear seat cushion. Refer to Seats and Carpet.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

  6. Remove the front generator support brace.
  7. Remove the generator mounting bolts.

  8. Object Number: 42124  Size: SH
  9. Remove the rear pencil brace bolts.

  10. Object Number: 42435  Size: SH
  11. Remove the output terminal nut.
  12. Disconnect the electrical connector.

  13. Object Number: 42122  Size: SH
  14. Remove the generator.

Installation Procedure

  1. Position the generator on the vehicle.

  2. Object Number: 42435  Size: SH
  3. Connect the generator electrical connector.
  4. Install the output terminal nut.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  6. Install the generator mounting bolts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  8. Install the front generator support brace.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (15 lb ft).

  10. Install the rear pencil brace.
  11. Install the rear pencil brace bolts.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  13. Install the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .
  14. Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16. Tighten
    Tighten the cable nut to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  17. Install the rear seat cushion. Refer to Seats and Carpet.
