Removal Procedure
Tools Required
J 38816-1A Water
Pump Remover/Installer
- Drain the cooling system. Refer to
Cooling System Draining and Filling
- Remove the air cleaner assembly.
- Remove the water pump belt cover.
- Remove the water pump drive belt.
- Remove the bypass hose.
- Remove the lower radiator hose from the thermostat housing.
- Remove the bolts from the water pump cover.
- Remove the water pump cover.
- Remove the water pump, the pump seal, and the gasket from the housing
using the J 38816-1A
. Turn
the tool clockwise in order to remove the water pump.
- Remove the water pump from the vehicle.
- Clean the water pump and the pump cover sealing surfaces.
Installation Procedure
Tools Required

Pump Remover/Installer
- Install the water pump using J 38816-1A
. Turn the tool counterclockwise in order to install the
pump.
Tighten
Tighten the water pump to 100 N·m (73 lb f
t).
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the water pump housing cover and the bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the water pump housing cover bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).
- Install the lower radiator hose to the thermostat housing.
- Install the thermostat bypass hose.
- Install the water pump drive belt.
- Install the water pump belt cover.
- Install the air cleaner assembly.
- Refill the cooling system. Refer to
Cooling System Draining and Filling

Removal Procedure
- Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to
Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing
any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to
the vehicle or its components.

- Remove the A/C compressor splash shield.
- Drain the cooling system. Refer to
Cooling System Draining and Filling
.
- Remove the supercharger drive belt.
- Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to
Drive Belt Replacement
.
- Remove the coil pack. Position the coil pack out of the way.
- Remove the supercharger belt tensioner. Refer to
Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement
.

- Attach the engine support fixture.
- Remove the engine mount. Refer to
Engine Mount Replacement
.
- Remove the power steering pump.
- Remove the engine mount bracket. Refer to
Engine Mount Bracket Replacement
.
- Remove the idler pulley.
- Remove the water pump pulley.
- Remove the water pump.
- Clean all of the gasket mating surfaces.
Installation Procedure
- Using a new gasket, install the water pump on the engine.
- Install the water pump bolts.
Tighten
• | Tighten the bolts (1) to 15 N·m (11 lb ft). |
• | Tighten the bolts (2) to 30 N·m (22 lb ft). |
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or

- Install the water pump pulley.
- Install the idler pulley.
- Install the engine mount bracket. Refer to
Engine Mount Bracket Replacement
.
- Install the power steering pump.
- Install the engine mount. Refer to
Engine Mount Replacement
.
- Remove the engine support fixture.
- Install the supercharger belt tensioner. Refer to
Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement
.
- Install the coil pack. Position the coil pack out of the way.
- Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to
Drive Belt Replacement
.
- Install the supercharger drive belt.
- Refill the cooling system. Refer to
Cooling System Draining and Filling
- Install the A/C compressor splash shield.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
- Check for coolant leaks.
