DEFINITION: The starter solenoid clicks but the engine does not crank or cranks slowly.

Important:

   • The battery must be in a charged state to avoid misdiagnosis. Refer to Battery Charging
   • The following tests are designed for engine and batteries at normal operating temperatures and assumes that there are no engine symptoms which would cause a no-start symptom. To use the tests under other conditions could result in a misdiagnosis.

1

  1. Remove the INJ fuse (Buick) or the INJ1 and INJ2 fuses (Oldsmobile) from the I/P fuse block to prevent the engine from starting.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.
  3. Using a digital multimeter, measure the voltage between the positive and the negative battery terminals while cranking. Crank the engine for at least 15 seconds, then read the voltage.

Is the reading greater than the specified value?
