VWHIXLWA DDWXRWS: 1987 RIVIERAS BELOW VIN HU404152 1987 TORONADOS BELOW VIN HU302957
Some 1987 Rivieras and Toronados may experience a no-start condition or other electrical system conditions that could be caused by the engine wiring harness being shorted to an exhaust system heat shield. If the harness insulation is cut by the heat shield, an electrical short is possible.
The harness should be checked for signs of chafing or abrasion whenever diagnosing electrical problems on models affected involving circuits that are routed through connector CIOO (refer to Service Manual, Section 8A).
If chafing or abrasion is found in the area of the exhaust heat shield, Part Number 8877974, tie strap, should be used to tie the harness to the brake booster (see illustration) to provide more clearance between the harness and heat shield.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
