There is a hissing noise when the following conditions exist:

If the noise is very objectionable, replace the service gear. A replacement gear will also have a slight noise, and is not always a cure for the condition.

Refer to the appropriate procedure:

A noise is audible after a power steering system fluid level check.

1. Operate the vehicle at idle.
2. Ensure that the engine has reached operating temperature.
3. Listen for the noise.

The intermediate shaft seal at the column is loose.

1. Service the intermediate shaft seal at the column. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column-Tilt.
2. Replace the intermediate shaft seal at the column. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column-Tilt.

The intermediate shaft seal at the gear is loose.

1. Service the intermediate shaft seal at the gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column-Tilt.
2. Replace the intermediate shaft seal at the gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column-Tilt.
