Generator Replacement 3.4L LQ1 Engine

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable at the battery. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  2. Remove the cross brace.
  3. Remove the coolant recovery tank.
  4. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  5. Remove the steering gear pipes from the clip mounted to the generator upper stud.

  7. Remove the generator upper stud and the nut.
  8. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to SECTION 0A.
  9. Remove the right wheel. Refer to SECTION 3E.
  10. Remove the right engine splash shield upper retaining clips. Refer to SECTION 4D.
  11. Remove the pull down shield. Refer to SECTION 4D.
  12. Remove the front exhaust pipe and the catalytic converter.
  13. Remove the generator splash shield that is attached to the cowl.
  14. Install a jacking fixture to support the engine.
  15. Remove the two rear cradle bolts.
  16. Remove the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt at the steering gear. Refer to SECTION 3B.
  17. Remove the right front cradle bolt.
  18. Remove the right side tie rod.

  20. Remove the generator splash shield at the drive axle.
  21. Disconnect the electrical connections at the generator.

  23. Remove the generator cooling duct.

  25. Remove the generator rear brace.
  26. Remove the generator rear brace nut at the engine.
  27. Remove the generator.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 45674  Size: SH
  1. Install the generator.
  2. Install the lower bolt.
  3. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the generator rear brace, bolt and nut. The parts should fit easily. Tightening bolts and nuts must not put the generator in a bind.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the generator rear brace nut to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

    Tighten
    Tighten the generator rear brace bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  6. Install the cooling duct.
  7. Connect the electrical connections to the generator.

  8. Object Number: 45672  Size: SH
  9. Install the generator splash shield at the drive axle.
  10. Install the right side tie rod.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 85 N·m (63 lb ft).

  12. Install the right front cradle bolt.
  13. Install the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt to the steering gear. Refer to SECTION 3B.
  14. Raise the cradle and install the rear cradle bolts.
  15. Remove the jacking fixture.
  16. Install the generator splash shield to the cowl.
  17. Install the front exhaust pipe and the catalytic converter.
  18. Install the engine splash shield with the upper retaining clips. Refer to SECTION 4D.
  19. Install the right wheel. Refer to SECTION 3E.
  20. Lower the vehicle.

  22. Install the generator upper stud and the nut.
  23. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  24. Connect the power steering gear pipes to the clip mounted on the generator stud.
  25. Install the accessory drive belt.
  26. Install the coolant recovery tank.
  27. Install the cross brace.
  28. Connect the negative cable at the battery.
  29. Tighten
    Tighten the cable bolt to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  30. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to SECTION 3B.

Generator Replacement 3100 Engine L82

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable from the battery terminal. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal.   2. Remove the acoustic engine cover.
  3. Remove the accessory drive belt at the generator.

  5. Remove the bolts from the generator.
  6. Remove the steering gear pipe clip and the steering gear pipe nut. Refer to SECTION 3B.
  7. Remove the stud from the generator.
  8. Disconnect the electrical connector from the generator.

  9. Object Number: 162164  Size: SH
  10. Loosen the generator front braces and the generator rear braces from the upper intake manifold.
  11. Remove the nut from the generator output (BAT) terminal.
  12. Disconnect the battery positive lead from the generator output (BAT) terminal.
  13. Remove the generator.

Installation Procedure

  1. Position the generator to the bracket.
  2. Connect the battery positive lead to the generator output (BAT) terminal.
  3. Install the nut to the generator output (BAT) terminal.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Hand start the generator front braces and the generator rear braces to the intake manifold.

  7. Connect the electrical connector to the generator.
  8. Hand start the stud to the generator.

  9. Object Number: 45670  Size: SH
  10. Install the bolts to the generator.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts and the screws to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

    Make sure that tightening the brace nuts does NOT bind the generator.

  12. Install the generator front brace nuts and the generator rear brace nuts to the intake manifold.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  14. Install the stud to the generator.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the stud to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  16. Install the steering gear pipe clip and the steering gear pipe nut. Refer to SECTION 3B.
  17. Connect the accessory drive belt to the generator.
  18. Install the acoustic engine cover.
  19. Connect the battery ground (negative) cable to the battery terminal.
  20. Tighten
    Tighten the battery ground (negative) cable to 15   N·m (11   lb   ft).

Generator Replacement 3800 Engine L36 and L67

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Ground (Negative) Cable Disconnect Caution in General Information.
  2. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belts Replacement (VIN K) in Engine Mechanical.
  3. Remove the generator front brace.

  5. Remove the electrical connector from the generator.
  6. Remove the mounting bolts from the generator.
  7. Remove the nut at the battery postitive lead from the generator.
  8. Remove the generator.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the generator.

  2. Object Number: 162154  Size: SH
  3. Install the nut at the battery positive lead to the generator.
  4. Install the mounting bolts to the generator.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the generator mounting bolts to 50   N·m (37   lb   ft).

  6. Install the electrical connector to the generator.
  7. Install the generator front brace.

  9. Install the drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belts Replacement (VIN K) in Engine Mechanical.
  10. Connect the battery ground (negative) cable.
