Battery Cable Pontiac/Buick

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Ground (Negative) Cable Disconnect Caution in General Information.
  2. Disconnect the battery (positive) cable from the battery.
  3. Remove the battery (positive) cable nut and cable from the underhood electrical center.
  4. Remove the battery ground (negative) cable bolt from the upper tie bar.
  5. Remove the battery ground (negative) cable bolt from frame rail near underhood electrical center.
  6. Remove the battery ground (negative) cable nut and cable from transaxle stud.
  7. Remove the battery (positive) cable from the starter motor "BAT" terminal.
  8. Remove the battery cable retainers from the lower tie bar.
  9. Remove the battery cables from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the battery cables to the vehicle.
  2. Install the battery cable retainers to the lower tie bar.
  3. Install the battery (positive) cable to the starter motor "BAT" terminal.
  4. Install the battery ground (negative) cable and nut to the transaxle stud.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten battery ground (negative) cable nut to 25   N·m (18  lb  ft).

  6. Install the battery ground (negative) cable and cable bolt to the frame rail near underhood electrical center.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten battery ground (negative) bolt to 10  N·m (89  lb   in).

  8. Install battery (positive) cable and nut to underhood electrical center.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten battery (positive) bolt to 25  N·m (18  lb  ft).

  10. Install battery (positive) cable to battery.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten battery (positive) cable to 15  N·m 11   lb   ft).

  12. Install the battery ground (negative) cable.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten battery ground (negative) cable to 15  N·m 11   lb   ft).

Battery Cable Chevrolet/Oldsmobile

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the air cleaner. Refer to Air Filter Element and Air Cleaner Assembly or Air Cleaner Element in Engine Controls.
  2. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Ground (Negative) Disconnect Notice in General Information.
  3. Disconnect the battery (positive) cable.
  4. Remove the battery (positive) cable nut and cable from the underhood electrical center.
  5. Remove the battery ground (negative) cable bolt from the upper tie bar.

  6. Object Number: 161950  Size: SH
  7. Remove the battery ground (negative) cable nut and cable from the transaxle stud.
  8. Remove the battery (positive) cable from the starter motor "BAT" terminal.
  9. Remove the battery ground (negative) and battery (positive) cables from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the battery ground (negative) and the battery (positive) cables to the vehicle.
  2. Install the battery (positive) cable to the starter motor "BAT" terminal.
  3. Install the battery ground (negative) cable and nut to the transaxle stud.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten battery ground (negative) cable nut to 25   N·m (18  lb  ft).

  5. Install the battery ground (negative) cable and bolt to the upper tie bar.

  6. Object Number: 161950  Size: SH

    Tighten
    Tighten battery ground (negative) bolt to 10  N·m (89  lb   in).

  7. Install battery (positive) cable and nut to underhood electrical center.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten battery (positive) bolt to 25  N·m (18  lb  ft).

  9. Install battery (positive) cable to battery.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten battery (positive) cable to 15  N·m 11   lb   ft).

  11. Install the battery ground (negative) cable.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten battery ground (negative) cable to 15  N·m 11   lb   ft).

  13. Install the air cleaner. Refer to Air Filter Element and Air Cleaner Assembly or Air Cleaner Element in Engine Controls.
