Engine Coolant Thermostat Replacement 3800

Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 38185 Hose Clamp Pliers


    Object Number: 162948  Size: MH
  1. Disconnect the air cleaner and duct assembly. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System .
  2. Remove the engine coolant, partially. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System .
  3. Remove the fuel injector sight shield. Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement (L36) in Engine Mechanical.
  4. Disconnect the radiator hose from the thermostat housing.

  6. Remove bolts from the thermostat housing.
  7. Remove the thermostat housing and gasket.
  8. Remove the thermostat.
  9. Clean the mating surfaces.

Installation Procedure

NOTICE: When adding coolant, it is important that you use GM Goodwrench DEX-COOL® or HAVOLINE® DEX-COOL® coolant. If Coolant other than DEX-COOL® or HAVOLINE® DEX-COOL® is added to the system the engine coolant will require change sooner; at 50 000 km (30,000 mi) or 24 months.

  1. Install the thermostat.
  2. Connect the thermostat housing to the intake manifold with the new gasket.
  3. Install the bolts to the thermostat housing with RTV Sealer GM P/N 1052366 or equivalent.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Connect the radiator hose to the thermostat housing.
  6. Install the fuel injector sight shield. Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement (L36) in Engine Mechanical.
  7. Install the air cleaner and duct assembly. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System .
  8. Install the engine coolant. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System .

Engine Coolant Thermostat Replacement 3100

Removal Procedure

Tools Required

  1. Remove the air cleaner and duct assembly. Refer to Engine Controls Table of Contents.
  2. Partially drain the coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  3. Disconnect the radiator hose from the thermostat housing.

  4. Object Number: 70064  Size: SH
  5. Remove the thermostat housing attaching bolts.

  6. Object Number: 30962  Size: SH
  7. Remove the thermostat housing and gasket.

  8. Object Number: 30995  Size: SH
  9. Remove the thermostat.
  10. Clean the mating surfaces.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 30995  Size: SH
  1. Install the thermostat.

  2. Object Number: 30962  Size: SH
  3. Install the thermostat housing and gasket to intake manifold.

  4. Object Number: 70064  Size: SH
  5. Install the bolts to the housing with RTV sealer GM P/N 1052366 or the equivalent.
  6. Tighten
    Bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.   7. Connect the radiator hose to the thermostat housing.
  8. Install the air cleaner and duct assembly. Refer to Engine Controls Table of Contents.
  9. Important: To properly fill a system that has been completely drained requires the use the air bleed vents.

  10. Refill the coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  11. Inspect the system for leaks.

Engine Coolant Thermostat Replacement 3.4L

Removal Procedure

Tools Required

  1. Remove the air cleaner and duct assembly. Refer to Engine Controls Table of Contents.
  2. Partially drain the coolant. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System .

  3. Object Number: 70048  Size: SH
  4. Disconnect the upper radiator hose at the thermostat housing.
  5. Remove the throttle cable cover.

  6. Object Number: 70043  Size: SH
  7. Remove the thermostat housing bolts.
  8. Remove the thermostat housing.
  9. Remove the thermostat.
  10. Clean the gasket mating surfaces.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 70043  Size: SH
  1. Install the thermostat.
  2. Install the gasket.
  3. Connect the thermostat housing to the intake manifold.
  4. Connect the bolts to the housing with RTV sealer GM P/N 1052366 or the equivalent.
  5. Tighten
    Bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  8. Connect the upper radiator hose to the thermostat housing.
  9. Install the air cleaner and duct assembly. Refer to Engine Controls Table of Contents.
  10. Important: To properly fill a system that has been completely drained requires the use the air bleed vents.

  11. Refill the coolant. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System .
  12. Inspect the system for leaks.
