Radiator Replacement Pontiac/Buick

Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 38185 Hose Clamp Pliers


    Object Number: 70049  Size: SH
  1. Remove air cleaner and duct assembly. Refer to Engine Controls Table of Contents.
  2. Drain the coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  3. Important: To prevent shearing of rubber bushing(s) loosen bolt(s) on engine strut(s) before swinging strut(s).

  4. Remove the engine strut brace bolts from the upper tie bar and rotate the strut(s) and brace(s) rearward. Refer to Engine Mount Bracket Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  5. Remove the electric cooling fans. Refer to Electric Cooling Fan .
  6. Remove the upper radiator brackets and bolts.

  8. Disconnect the clamp from the upper hose at the radiator using the J 38185 .
  9. Disconnect the clamp from the lower hose at the radiator using the J 38185 .
  10. Remove the low coolant module. Refer to Coolant Level Sensor .
  11. Disconnect the transaxle oil cooler lines from the radiator. Refer to Automatic Transaxle On-Vehicle Service.
  12. Remove the radiator.

Installation Procedure

NOTICE: When adding coolant, it is important that you use GM Goodwrench DEX-COOL® or HAVOLINE® DEX-COOL® coolant. If Coolant other than DEX-COOL® or HAVOLINE® DEX-COOL® is added to the system the engine coolant will require change sooner; at 50 000 km (30,000 mi) or 24 months.

  1. Install the radiator to the lower mounts.
  2. Connect the transaxle oil cooler lines to the radiator. Refer to Automatic Transaxle On-Vehicle Service.
  3. Install the low coolant module. Refer to Coolant Level Sensor .
  4. Connect the clamp to the upper hose at the radiator using the J 38185 .
  5. Connect the clamp to the lower hose at the radiator using the J 38185 .

  7. Install the radiator brackets and bolts.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 24 N·m (18 lb ft)

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  9. Install the electric cooling fans. Refer to Electric Cooling Fan .
  10. Move the Engine strut(s) to the proper position. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  11. Refill the coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  12. Install the air cleaner and the duct assembly. Refer to Engine Controls Table of Contents.
  13. Inspect for leaks.

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove air cleaner and duct assembly. Refer to Engine Controls Table of Contents.
  2. Drain the coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  3. Important: To prevent shearing of rubber bushing(s) loosen bolt(s) on engine strut(s) before swinging strut(s).

  4. Remove the engine strut brace bolts from the upper tie bar and rotate the strut(s) and brace(s) rearward. Refer to Engine Mount Bracket Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  5. Remove the electric cooling fans. Refer to Electric Cooling Fan .
  6. Remove the upper radiator brackets and bolts.
  7. Disconnect the clamp from the upper hose at the radiator using the J 38185 .
  8. Disconnect the clamp from the lower hose at the radiator using the J 38185 .

  11. Disconnect the transaxle oil cooler lines from the radiator. Refer to Automatic Transaxle On-Vehicle Service.
  12. Remove the radiator.

  7. Install the radiator brackets and bolts.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 24 N·m (18 lb ft)
