UNATTENDED HORN ACTIVATION OR HORN (S) INOPERATIVE

SUBJECT: UNATTENDED HORN ACTIVATION OR HORN(S) INOPERATIVE (REPLACE HORN PAD/AIRBAG MODULE; HORN FUSE)

MODELS: 1997 BUICK PARK AVENUE - BUILT FROM START OF REGULAR PRODUCTION (SORP) THROUGH V4605317

CONDITION:

SOME OWNERS MAY COMMENT ON UNATTENDED HORN ACTIVATION OR INOPERATIVE HORN(S) DURING COLD AMBIENT CONDITIONS.

CAUSE:

THE HORN PAD CONTACT SURFACE CLEARANCES MAY NOT BE SUFFICIENT ENOUGH TO PREVENT UNATTENDED HORN ACTIVATION.

CORRECTION:

1. WITH YOUR HAND HELD FLAT, USE THE PALM OF YOUR HAND TO WIPE THE HORN PAD COVERING. START AT THE TOP RIGHT HALF, MOVING TO THE BOTTOM RIGHT HALF IN A SLOW SWEEPING MOTION.

- REPEAT THE TEST BY MOVING YOUR HAND IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION (BOTTOM TO TOP). DO NOT PRESS ON THE HORN PAD.

THE AMOUNT OF PRESSURE SHOULD BE SIMILAR TO THE PRESSURE REQUIRED TO WIPE DUST OFF A TABLE.

LISTEN CAREFULLY. IF A "CHIRP" OR A CONTINUOUS "HONK" IS HEARD, THE HORN PAD/AIRBAG MODULE WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED. IF NOTHING IS HEARD, PROCEED TO STEP 2 TO VERIFY PROPER HORN OPERATION.

2. MAKE CERTAIN THE HORNS ARE FUNCTIONAL BY PRESSING FIRMLY ON THE HORN PAD. IF THE HORNS FUNCTION PROPERLY, NO FURTHER ACTION IS REQUIRED. IF THE HORNS DO NOT FUNCTION, DO THE FOLLOWING:

- INSPECT AND REPLACE (IF NECESSARY) THE HORN 30 AMP FUSE IN THE FUSE CENTER - RIGHT SIDE UNDERHOOD.

- REPLACE THE HORN PAD/AIRBAG MODULE (SEE HORN PAD/AIRBAG INFLATOR MODULE REPLACEMENT IN SECTION 3F OF THE SERVICE MANUAL.

- CHECK AND REPLACE ANY FAILED HORNS. REFER TO SECTION 8A-40 IN THE SERVICE MANUAL FOR DIAGNOSIS.
