Removal Procedure

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the air cleaner cover.
  3. Disconnect the transaxle electrical connector.
  4. Disconnect shift control cable bracket with cable attached.
  5. Remove the top transaxle case bolts.
  6. Remove the top bolt from rear transaxle mount.
  7. Remove the left side steering rack mount bolts.
  8. Disconnect the oxygen sensor connector.
  9. Install the J 28467-360 .
  10. Load the support fixture by tightening the wing-nuts several turns to relieve tension on the frame and mounts
  11. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to General Information.
  12. Remove both front tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tires And Wheels.
  13. Remove the left splash shield assembly. Refer to Body Front End.
  14. Remove the power steering line bracket from the engine frame.
  15. Remove the right splash shield.
  16. Remove the left transaxle mount from engine frame.

  18. Remove the right transaxle mount from the engine frame.
  19. Remove the right steering rack mount bolts from engine frame.
  20. Tie off and support steering rack to the exhaust with mechanics wire.
  21. Disconnect the transaxle cooler lines from engine frame.
  22. Remove the sway bar mounts from lower control arms. Refer to Front Suspension.
  23. Loosen the left and right lower ball joint nuts. Separate the lower ball joints from the steering knuckles. Refer to Front Suspension. Hand tighten the nuts back on the ball joints.
  24. Remove the engine frame bolts.
  25. Remove the ball joint nuts and lower the engine frame.
  26. Remove the left and right drive axles from the transaxle. Refer to Drive Axle.

  28. Remove the Torque converter cover.

  30. Remove the flywheel to torque converter bolts. Mark the flywheel to converter relationship to ensure proper reassembly.
  31. Disconnect Input speed sensor electrical connectors.
  32. Remove the engine to transaxle bracket.

  34. Remove the transaxle fluid filler tube.

  36. Rear engine mount.

  38. Remaining transaxle to engine bolts.
  39. Transaxle from vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the transaxle into the vehicle.

  2. Object Number: 166598  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the transaxle to engine bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the transaxle bolts to 75N·m (55 lb ft).

  5. Install the rear engine mount.

  6. Object Number: 166580  Size: SH
  7. Install the transaxle fluid filler tube.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the filler tube bolt to 20N·m (15 lb ft).

  9. Install the transaxle brace to engine.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the transaxle brace to engine bolts to 60N·m (44 lb ft).

  11. Connect the input speed sensor electrical connectors.

    Important: 

       • Align the mark made on the torque converter with the mark made on the flywheel made in the disassembly.
       • Tighten all the torque converter to flywheel bolts twice.

  13. Install the flywheel to torque converter bolts.
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the flywheel to torque converter bolts to 62N·m (46 lb ft).

  15. Install the torque converter cover.
  16. Important: 

       • Install the J 37292-B before installing the right side drive axle.
       • Use care when installing the right side drive axle into the transaxle case. The splined shaft of the drive axle can easily be damage the seal.

  17. Install the left drive axle and the right drive axle to the transaxle. Refer to Drive Axle.
  18. Install the ball joint nuts. Hand tighten the ball joint nuts. Raise the engine frame.
  19. Install the engine frame bolts.
  20. Tighten
    Tighten the engine frame bolts to 112N·m (83 lb ft).

  21. Tighten the ball joint nuts. Refer to Front Suspension.
  22. Install the sway bar mounts to the lower control arms. Refer to Front Suspension.
  23. Connect the transaxle cooler lines to the engine frame.
  24. Install the right steering rack mount bolts to the engine frame.
  25. Tighten
    Tighten the steering rack mount bolts to 65N·m (48 lb ft).

  26. Install the right transaxle mount to the engine frame.
  27. Install the left transaxle mount to the engine frame.
  28. Install the right splash shield.
  29. Install the power steering line bracket to the engine frame.
  30. Install the left splash shield assembly. Refer to Body Front End.
  31. Important: Torque the wheel nuts to specifications. Refer to Tires and Wheels.

  32. Install both of the front tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tires and Wheels.
  33. Lower the vehicle.
  34. Remove the J 28467-B .
  35. Connect to oxygen sensor connector.
  36. Install the left side steering rack mount bolts.
  37. Tighten
    Tighten the steering rack mount bolts to 65N·m (48 lb ft).

  38. Install the top bolt of the rear transaxle mount.
  39. Tighten
    Tighten the rear transaxle bolt to 58N·m (42 lb ft).

    Important: Check adjustment of the shift cables. Re-adjust as needed.

  40. Connect the shift control cable and the shift control cable bracket.
  41. Connect the transaxle electrical connector.
  42. Install the air cleaner cover.
  43. Connect the negative battery cable.
  44. Check and adjust the transaxle fluid level.
  45. Road test the vehicle and check for transaxle leaks.
