Vehicles with passive belts (automatic safety belts) may experience a condition with armrests pad coming loose or falling off when the door is closed. This may occur on cars built prior to mid March, 1987. These can be identified by the absence of a fastener at the rear face of the armrest pad.
To correct the above condition, the following procedure should be used:
1. Remove armrest.
2. Cut out the armrest base template (Figures 3A & 3B) and lay in place as shown in Figure 2.
3. Drill two (2) 1/8" holes using template, and attach the new bracket (Part No. 20739984 ordered from GM Parts), using two (2) 1/8" pop rivets (Part No. 9418068 or a standard 1/8" rivet). See Figure 1 for installed bracket location.
4. Cut out required armrest pad template (Figures 3A & 3B) and lay in place as shown in Figure 2.
5. Drill one (1) 8.5mm diameter hole in the armrest at template location.
6. Reinstall armrest pad to base and secure with push type fastener as shown in Figure 1. Fasteners are to be ordered from GM Parts by trim colour as follows: 20740126 Very Dark Sapphiue (Blue) 20740127 Medium Emerald 20740128 Light Driftwood 20740129 Garnet Red 20740130 Medium Dark Gray
7. It is recommended that both front armrest pads be done at the same time.
Use the most applicable labour operation from the Canadian Labour Time Guide and claim .3 hours.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
