CAMPAIGN: HIGH ALT. VEHICLE EMISS. CONTROL INFO LABEL

MODELS AFFECTEO: 1982 - LeSabre & Electra Estate Wagon & Rivieras Equipped With High Altitude Diesel (NA6) Engines

CONDITION

General Motors has determined that some 1982 LeSabre and Electra Estate Wagons and Rivieras built with a high altitude diesel engine have an incorrect Vehicle Emission Control Label. The label incorrectly identifies the vehicle as being designed for principle use at low altitude. The label is required by the Federal Clean Air Act.

DEALER ACTION

Dealers are to install the correct Vehicle Emission Control Information Label on vehicles involved as described in the Label Installation section of this bulletin.

Each dealer will receive a correct label for all cars listed on the print-out, without an owner name and address (owner of record). Those cars showing a dealer name or no name and address are the dealer's responsibility to correct. Additional labels may be obtained from your Zone Office.

Since the label can easily be installed, it is being mailed directly to owners of record. Owners may install the label personally.or request that it be installed by your dealership. Should this occur, the label is to be installed at no charge to the owner.

DEALER MATERIAL

If your dealership has vehicles involved in this campaign, you will receive the following items:

1. Listing of vehicles to campaign that were shipped to your dealership.

2. One label for each vehicle shipped to your dealership for which no owner of record is listed.

Dear Buick Owner:

Buick Motor Division's records indicate that you are the owner of a 1982 Buick which was built with a misprinted vehicle emission control label. This label is required by the Federal Clean Air Act.

The misprinted label incorrectly identifies your vehicle as being designed for principle use at low altitude. The label should identify your vehicle as being designed for principle use at high altitude.

We have enclosed the correct Vehicle Emission Control Information Label for your vehicle. You may install this label yourself or take it to a Buick dealer for installation at no charge to you.

To install the Vehicle Emission Control Label yourself, instructions are as follows:

1. Open hood of vehicle and locate the old emission label. This label is located on a panel just above the radiator assembly on all models.

2. Clean the surface of the old label with soapy water and wipe dry.

3. Remove backing from new label and carefully apply label over old label.

NOTICE: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE OR LOOSEN THE NEW LABEL ONCE IT HAS BEEN APPLIED, AS THIS WILL DEFACE THE LABEL.

If you install the new label, rather than asking your dealer to do it, please tell us by signing and returning the postage paid pre-addressed reply card. If you have sold, traded or disposed of your vehicle, please fill out the information requested on the reply card and return it to us. This will assist us in assuring that all affected vehicles have been corrected and will eliminate the necessity for bothering you with follow-up notifications.

Should you choose to have a Buick Dealer install the label, please contact your dealer to arrange a mutually satisfactory service date to have this modification performed. Take the enclosed label with you. The labor time to perform this correction is approximately 5 minutes. Please allow additional time for the dealer to process your vehicle.

We are sorry to cause you this inconvenience; however, we have taken this action in the interest of your continued satisfaction with our products.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
