SHAFT STOP FOR INTERNAL GEAR 2004R TRANSMISSION

ON SOME EARLY PRODUCTION 1982 CARS EQUIPPED WITH THE THM 200-4R (MODEL AA) TRANSMISSIONS, THE OUTPUT SHAFT WAS BUILT CONTAINING A SNAP RING ATTACHED TO IT. THE SNAP RING WAS DESIGNED TO ACT AS A STOP OR A SHOULDER FOR THE HUB OF THE REAR INTERNAL GEAR (REFER TO FIGURE 1). OMITTING THE OUTPUT SHAFT SNAP RING DURING AN OVERHAUL WOULD RESULT IN EXCESSIVE END PLAY CLEARANCE OF THE REAR INTERNAL GEAR. THIS EXCESSIVE CLEARANCE COULD CAUSE WEAR AND/OR A NOISE CONDITION IN THE COMPOUND PLANETARY GEAR SET COMPONENTS. ALL AFFECTED TRANSMISSIONS ARE BETWEEN AND INCLUDE THE BUILD DATE NUMBERS 334 THROUGH 349 (THE FIRST THREE NUMBERS OF THE TRANSMISSION SERIAL NUMBER LOCATED ON THE TRANSMISSION TAG) AND CAN ALSO BE IDENTIFIED BY AN "AA2" STAMPED IN INK ON THE BELL HOUSING (REFER TO FIGURE 2). WHEN SERVICING A 1982 THM 200-4R TRANSMISSION THAT HAS THE OUTPUT SHAFT WITH A SNAP RING, MAKE SURE THAT IF THE RING IS REMOVED, IT IS REINSTALLED DURING ASSEMBLY. IF THE ORIGINAL SNAP RING IS DAMAGED OR OVERSTRETCHED, REPLACE WITH A NEW SNAP RING (P/N 8621331) ON THE ORIGINAL SHAFT BEFORE REASSEMBLY. IF A NEW OUTPUT SHAFT (P/N 8634021) MUST BE USED, NO SNAP RING WILL BE NEEDED DUE TO A MACHINING CHANGE. * ILLUSTRATION *

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
