Problem

Action

The actuator rod is bent or restricted.

  1. Inspect the actuator rod.
  2. Replace as needed. Refer to Steering Column Housing - Disassemble (Floor Shift) or Steering Column Housing - Disassemble (Column Shift).

There are burrs on any of the following components:

    • The sector
    • The rack
    • The housing
    • The support
    • The actuator coupling rod
  1. Inspect the components.
  2. Service the components as needed. Refer to Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle or Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle or Lock Housing Assembly - Disassemble (Floor Shift) or Lock Housing Assembly - Disassemble (Column Shift).

Any of the following components are damaged:

    • The lock cylinder
    • The ignition switch
    • The rack
  1. Inspect the components.
  2. Replace the components as needed.

There is a distorted coupling slot in the rack.

    • Clean the coupling slot in the rack.
    • Inspect the components.
    • Replace the components as needed. Refer to Steering Column Housing - Disassemble (Floor Shift) or Steering Column Housing - Disassemble (Column Shift).

The housing to cover is misaligned.

  1. Inspect the housing.
  2. Service the components as needed. Refer to Steering Column Housing - Disassemble (Floor Shift) or Steering Column Housing - Disassemble (Column Shift).

The ignition switch mounting bracket is bent.

  1. Inspect the bracket.
  2. Replace the bracket as needed. Refer to Ignition and Key Alarm Switch Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle or Ignition and Key Alarm Switch Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

The shift linkage is maladjusted.

  1. Inspect the shift linkage.
  2. Replace the shift linkage as needed. Refer to Range Selector Lever Cable Replacement .

The rack preload spring is broken or deformed.

Replace the rack preload spring as needed. Refer to Steering Column Housing - Disassemble (Floor Shift) or Steering Column Housing - Disassemble (Column Shift).

The sector shaft is bent.

Replace the sector shaft as needed. Refer to Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle or Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
