CAMPAIGN: VEHICLE EMISSION CONTROL LABEL -INCORRECT

MODELS: 1984 Cutlass Cieras Equipped With 3-8L MPFI Engines (VIN Code 3)

TO: ALL AFFECTED DEALERS:

CONDITION:

--------- General Motors of Canada has determined that some 1984 Cutlass Cieras have incorrect information on the Vehicle Emission Control Information Label. These labels state "NO IGNITION TIMING ADJUSTMENT". The label should state "IGNITION TIMING TO BE SET AT 15 DEGREES B.T.D.C.".

VEHICLES INVOLVED:

Certain 1984 Cutlass Cieras equipped with a 3.8L (LN3) MPFI engine with the following serial numbers:

lG3AM1939EG361897 lG3AM1931EG361019 lG3AM1935EG362898 lG3AJ1939EG359690 lG3AM1931EG363045 lG3AJ1936EG361414 lG3AM273XEG359911 lG3AM1937EG361865

DEALER ACTION

Since labels can be installed very easily, and because we do not want to cause owners unnecessary inconvenience, the new labels have been furnished directly to affected owners of record. Owners may install them personally or they may request Dealer assistance for installation.

All affected vehicles have been identified by the VIN listing provided to involved Dealers with this bulletin Any Dealer not receiving a listing was not shipped any of the affected vehicles.

DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY:

Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.

Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used vehicle inventory, or it is in your Dealership for service in the future, you should take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before reselling or releasing the vehicle.

Owners of vehicles recently sold from your new vehicle inventory are to be contacted by the Dealer, and arrangements made to make the required modification according to instructions contained in this bulletin.

CAMPAIGN PROCEDURE:

Refer to Section 4 of the Service Policies and Procedures Manual for the detailed procedure on handling Product Campaigns. Dealers are required to complete the campaign on all transfers as soon as possible.

OWNER NOTIFICATION:

All owners of record at the time of campaign release are shown on the attached computer listing and have been notified by first class mail from General Motors. The listings provided are for campaign activity only and should not be used for any other purpose.

PARTS INFORMATION:

Emission labels will be sent directly to owners of record.

PARTS AND LABOUR CLAIM INFORMATION:

If a customer requests Dealer assistance for installation, please have DSM handle under warranty.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Open the hood and locate the old label. (Should be located on the left front strut upper mounting housing.) Refer to illustration.

2. Clean the surface of the old label with soapy water and wipe dry.

3. Remove backing from NEW label and apply the new label over the old label.

NOTICE: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE OR LOOSEN THE NEW LABEL ONCE IT HAS BEEN APPLIED, AS THIS WILL DEFACE THE LABEL.

INSTALLATION OF CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL

Clean surface of radiator upper mounting panel and apply a Campaign Identification Label. Make sure the correct campaign number is inserted on the label. This will indicate that the campaign has been completed.

Dear General Motors Customer:

General Motors of Canada has determined that some 1984 Cutlass Cieras have incorrect information on the Vehicle Emission Control Information Label. The incorrect label states "No Ignition Timing Adjustment". The label should state "Ignition Timing to be Set at 15 Degrees B.T.D.C."

To install the Vehicle Emission Control Information Label yourself, instructions are as follows:

1. Open hood of vehicle and locate the old emission label on the left front strut upper mounting housing

2. Clean the surface of the old label with soapy water and wipe dry.

3. Remove backing from new label and carefully apply label over old label.

NOTICE: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE OR LOOSEN THE NEW LABEL ONCE IT HAS BEEN APPLIED, AS THIS WILL DEFACE THE LABEL.

Should you choose to have a GM Dealer install the label, please contact your Dealer to arrange a mutually satisfactory service date to have this modification perfomed. Take the enclosed label with you. The Labour time to perfom this modification is approximately 5 minutes. Please allow additional time for the Dealer to process your vehicle.
