RAPPING NOISE FROM ENGINE MOUNT STRUT GROUND TO BRACKET

Models Affected: 1984 Century With V-6 Diesel (Vin Code T)

A condition of a light rapping noise or resonance may be encountered with a V-6 diesel engine at idle or coast down. This may be due to a grounding interference between the aluminum strut and the welded reinforcement on the mounting bracket.

To correct this condition, remove the strut from the mounting bracket. Grind as necessary the reinforcement metal on the engine bracket to obtain a minimum of 2.38mm (3/32") clearance when the strut is reinstalled. See illustration.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
