RACK AND PINION BOOT SEAL REMOVAL PROCEDURE

THE CLAMP WHICH FASTENS THE BOOT TO THE TIE ROD HAS BEEN REPLACED WITH A NEW TYPE PLASTIC SEAL WITH A "LIP" WHICH SNAPS IN TO A GROOVE ON THE TIE ROD TO PROVIDE THE REQUIRED GREASE TIGHT SEAL. (FIG. 1) IF A TECHNICIAN ATTEMPTS TO REMOVE THE NEW BOOT BY PULLING IT TOWARD THE THREADED END OF THE TIE ROD, THE BOOT LIP MAY BE DAMAGED TO THE EXTENT THAT IT WILL LEAK. THE PROPER PROCEDURE FOR REMOVAL OF THE NEW BOOT IS TO SLIDE THE SMALL END OF THE BOOT TOWARD THE GEAR END OF THE TIE ROD UNTIL THE GROOVE IS EXPOSED. THEN, PLACE A RUBBER BAND IN THE GROOVE AND SLIDE THE SMALL END OF THE BOOT OVER THE RUBBER BAND AND OFF THE THREADED END OF THE ROD. THIS PROCEDURE WILL PREVENT BOOT LIP DAMAGE.
